Onward
Draft champions, slay monsters, and rally minions to destroy the enemy base in this game heavily inspired by MOBA video games.
Onward is rated 8.5 on BoardGameGeek. This is what they say…
Utterly fantastic experience. League of Legends in a box, without the raging. A masterpiece of game design. Give us more heroes and items!
A very elegant and tight adaptation of MOBA concepts [...] Even in your first game you'll find more time contemplating your and opponent strategy than you will considering the rules, unlike many other games of comparable depth and variety.
I've been playing DOTA2 for years and had a hard time seeing how a board game could replicate the MOBA experience [...] I was wrong. The game is really streamlined and surprisingly well-balanced. It captures the MOBA feel 100%.
Onward captures the MOBA experience extremely well. From the hero drafting, jungle farming, lane pushing, and tense battles, to the game-changing abilities and Outsider last-hits, Onward is a great time.
I've owned/tried all the MOBA implementations out there and this feels most like a MOBA, is the quickest to play, and is the easiest to get to the table [...] I'll own and play this for a lifetime.
The best part for me is probably the minion system. It is both innovative and very gratifying to manipulate. The unusual turn structure also deserves a mention. It's cleverly organized and amplifies the importance of initiative.
An excellent game that does exactly what it sets out to do: make a genuine MOBA experience (without the toxicity) in a board game. The strategic depth far outpaces the rules complexity, and the replayability is nearly infinite.
Captures the MOBA feel incredibly well. It requires a delicate balance of focusing on minions, lanes, jungles, and heroes. The Heroes are all pretty asymmetrical and it feels very strategic. I love it!
If you haven't played a MOBA, what does Onward feel like? To me, it feels most like a coop game like Spirit Island or Pandemic. You run around putting out fires everywhere while trying to find time to advance your own win objective before the clock ultimately runs out.
Rules are not heavy and the whole gameplay is light-weight and enjoyable. Also, 30+ heroes makes every session really different which is a huge plus.
